Dr. Brendan Keogh is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Queensland University of Technology and Chief Investigator at the Digital Media Research Centre. His research examines game development cultures, creative labor, and indie game production through ethnographic and critical approaches.
Education includes:
- PhD from RMIT University Melbourne
His research investigates the tensions between creative, technical, and entrepreneurial imperatives in game development, with particular attention to Australian independent game scenes. Recent projects analyze labor conditions, unionization efforts, and higher education's role in game development training. Publications challenge conventional industry boundaries by examining non-commercial production practices.
Publications consistently engage with game production cultures, featuring books critiquing industry structures and articles examining localized development practices. The 2021-2024 work shows increased focus on labor organization and game education challenges.
Dr. Keogh authored 'A Play of Bodies: How We Perceive Videogames' (MIT Press 2018) and co-authored 'The Unity Game Engine and The Circuits of Cultural Software' (Palgrave 2019). He contributes to public discourse through outlets including Overland, The Conversation, and Polygon.
