Dr. Jasper van Vught is an Assistant Professor in New Media and Game Studies at Utrecht University's Department of Media and Culture Studies, within the Humanities faculty. He holds dual affiliations with the Institute for Cultural Inquiry and the Media and Performance Studies research group. His roles include serving as Programme Coordinator for the Media and Culture Bachelor's programme and as a core member of the Utrecht Centre for Game Research and the Centre for the Study of Digital Games and Play.
Van Vught's research focuses on methodological advancements in game studies, particularly through videogame formalism, and pedagogical innovations in teaching with games. His co-authored monograph *Videogame Formalism* (2023) explores analytical frameworks for understanding game aesthetics and interaction. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary projects like the Spationomy simulation game package, designed to enhance spatial economic education through play-based learning.
His work bridges theoretical analysis and practical application, including discursive game design for conflict resolution and historical dataset engagement. Van Vught frequently organizes academic events such as the Spationomy Summer School and has delivered keynote addresses on topics like playful scholarship and formalist methodologies.
