Benjamin Lotto is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Vassar College, where he has been since 1993. He holds a BS from Yale University (1982) and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley (1988), under the supervision of Donald Sarason. His research focuses on operator theory, functional analysis, complex analysis, and linear algebra, with a particular emphasis on Banach and Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions, Hardy spaces, de Branges-Rovnyak spaces, and operators such as Toeplitz, Hankel, and composition operators.
He has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant (2023) to co-host the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference with colleagues from Skidmore College and Union College. His teaching includes courses like MATH 221 (Linear Algebra) and MATH 301 (Topics in Advanced Mathematics and Statistics). Lotto has contributed to interdisciplinary projects, including analyses of healthcare data in rural areas and collaborative transnational studies in reproductive endocrinology. His work spans theoretical mathematics, applied research, and academic leadership.
His research publications span decades, addressing topics ranging from foundational linear algebra proofs to advanced operator theory in complex spaces. He has also engaged in academic service, including organizing conferences and mentoring undergraduate research through programs like the Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI) at Vassar. His contributions reflect a commitment to both theoretical exploration and fostering mathematical education at the undergraduate level.
