Benjamin Dobbs is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Furman University. His research focuses on the intersection of music and intellectual history during the Protestant Reformation in Middle/North Germany, with emphases on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century repertoires, harmonic theory evolution, and the Thirty Years’ War’s impact on European musical cultures. He holds a Ph.D. and M.M. from the University of North Texas and a B.A. from the University of Central Arkansas.

Research Interests:
His work explores analytical methods for early modern music, the development of harmonic theory alongside contrapuntal practices, and the sociocultural contexts shaping music during religious upheavals. His doctoral work analyzed Heinrich Baryphonus and Heinrich Grimm’s Pleiades musicae (1615/1630), contextualizing it within Reformation-era philosophy, religion, and pedagogy.
Professional Activities:
Dobbs has presented at conferences in the U.S., Germany, Austria, and Canada, with publications in Musiktheorie, Renaissance Quarterly, and the Lexikon des Orchesters. He has received grants from DAAD, the American Friends of the Herzog August Bibliothek, and Furman’s Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.
Teaching Philosophy:
Dobbs emphasizes integrating music history and theory to foster critical thinking. He believes in mentoring students individually and advancing scholarship through collaboration between teaching and research.
Musical Engagement:
He sings in the Greenville Chorale and Episcopal Church of the Resurrection choir, occasionally serving as cantor, conductor, and organist. He is also a member of the Herring Chamber Ensemble.
