Benjamin Chapman, PhD, is the Department Head of Agricultural and Human Sciences and a Professor at North Carolina State University. He leads the Safe Plates food safety extension and research program, focusing on reducing foodborne illness through consumer and professional food safety interventions. He is also Project Director for FoodCoVNET and Co-Chair of STOP Foodborne Illness board of directors. His research spans food safety systems, consumer behavior, and communication strategies across the food supply chain.
Education: BS in Molecular Biology and Genetics, MS and PhD in Plant Agriculture from the University of Guelph. Awards include the 2020 NCACES Award, Larry Beuchat Young Researcher Award (2015), and multiple extension and engagement recognitions.
Research interests center on food safety culture, home preservation, and risk communication. His work addresses cross-contamination, pathogen prevalence, and industry outreach. Notable grants include projects on viral threats in food supply chains, FSMA training for small businesses, and consumer labeling research.
Leadership roles include directing FoodCoVNET and co-hosting Food Safety Talk and Risky or Not podcasts. He advises on federal and state food safety policies, with contributions to USDA and NIFA initiatives.
