Benjamin B. Gelman is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). He serves as Director of the Texas NeuroAIDS Research Center, an Investigator at the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), and is a founding member of the National NeuroAIDS Tissue Consortium. His work focuses on HIV/AIDS-related neurocognitive dysfunction and brain inflammation.
- Education: AB in Biochemistry (1971), PhD in Environmental Health (1978), MD (1983) from the University of Cincinnati
Research Interests:
The lab investigates how persistent brain inflammation in HIV/AIDS affects synaptic protein turnover and dopaminergic transmission. They also study neurodegenerative mechanisms in HAND, neuroimmunological responses, and contribute to the CHARTER study of HIV dementia. Their work spans neuropathology, neurovirology, and translational research.
