Benjamin Alexander Slater is a Senior Lecturer at Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Design and Media, where he teaches narrative and screenwriting. With a BA in Drama from the University of Bristol and a Masters in Theatre from Lancaster University, UK, he recently completed his PhD in Creative Writing/English at NTU in 2025 with his dissertation LOST CINEMA.
Slater's research focuses on Southeast Asian cinema, particularly American and European films made in Singapore, film history, screenwriting methodologies, and digital media. His scholarly work intersects with his creative practice as an active screenwriter, editor, and curator with over two decades of experience across film, theater, performance, and digital art.
His writings on film have appeared in Screen International and Cahiers du Cinema (World Cinema Editions), and he has authored significant works including Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore (2006). Slater's creative output shows a strong trend toward Southeast Asian narratives, with recent works like the 'tropical noir' feature film MALAM (2021) and the TV series COME CLOSER (2023) demonstrating his commitment to regional storytelling.
His academic and creative achievements have been recognized with the Commendation Medal for service from the Singapore government in 2022. Slater has also made significant contributions to film curation through projects like Singaporeana! (2019) and Cinema Reclaimed (2020-), and served as Associate Chair of Students in ADM between 2019 and 2022 during the challenging period of the COVID pandemic.
As both educator and practitioner, Slater bridges academic scholarship with creative industry practice, bringing real-world experience to his teaching while contributing to the development of Southeast Asian cinema through his writing, editing, and curatorial work.
