Bengt Winblad is a Professor of Geriatrics at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), Karolinska Institutet, where he also serves as a senior professor and leads research in neurogeriatrics. He holds a combined position as chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, and is a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet since 1988. He is also an honorary professor at Peking University, China.
His research primarily focuses on clinical evaluations and treatments of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease, with extensive work in epidemiological, genetic, pathological, and biochemical aspects. He has published over 700 articles and supervised more than 150 doctoral students, making him a leading figure in dementia research. His work spans biomarker development, disease-modifying therapies, healthcare economics, and population-based studies.
Recent publications highlight his leadership in blood-based biomarkers, cost-effectiveness of Alzheimer's treatments, glycan biomarkers, and immunotherapies. His articles consistently appear in top journals such as Nature Medicine, Alzheimer's & Dementia, and The Lancet Neurology, indicating sustained high-impact research output.
His scientific awards include the Nordic Prize in Gerontology (2002).
He has been instrumental in major international collaborations and consortia, including the IPECAD modeling framework and the MOPEAD project. His research group, affiliated with Lars Tjernberg, continues to explore molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, particularly focusing on tau and amyloid pathways, synaptic dysfunction, and predictive biomarkers.
