Bengt Robert Holmstrom is a Senior Fellow at the European University Institute within the Florence School of Transnational Governance. He was previously the Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he joined in 1994 with a joint appointment at the Sloan School of Management, and served as Department Head from 2003–2006. Holmström earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1978 and held positions at Yale University’s School of Management (1983–1994) and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School (1979–1982).
Research Interests: Holmström’s work focuses on contract theory, incentive design, and their applications to corporate governance, financial markets, and economic theory. His analysis of the 2008–09 financial crisis has reshaped understanding of debt’s role in financial systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2016), shared with Oliver Hart, for foundational work in contract theory.
Advisory Roles: He currently serves on academic advisory boards for the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, Toulouse School of Economics, and the Luohan Academy in China. Previously, he was a board member of Nokia Corporation (1999–2012), the Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA (2005–2018), and Aalto University (2010–2017).
