Benedikt Kranemann

Professor Benedikt Kranemann is a distinguished scholar of Liturgical Science at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Erfurt, where he has served as Professor since 1998. His academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions including the University of Münster and academic collaborations with faculties in Trier and Fribourg. He holds leadership positions in several major liturgical organizations and serves on numerous ecclesiastical advisory committees at national and international levels.

Kranemann completed his studies in Catholic Theology, German Studies, and Philosophy, earning his doctorate in 1989 and habilitation in 1994. His academic journey includes positions as Scientific Assistant and University Lecturer at the University of Münster (1988-1994), Privatdozent at Münster (1994-1998), and Head of the Scientific Library of the German Liturgical Institute in Trier (1995-1998).

Professor Kranemann's research focuses on the historical development and contemporary challenges of Christian liturgy, with particular expertise in liturgical renewal, the intersection of worship and community formation, and the adaptation of traditional liturgical forms to modern contexts. His work bridges historical liturgical scholarship with practical theological reflection on current worship practices across diverse Christian traditions. Recent publications demonstrate his engagement with global liturgical developments, including the Amazon Synod and innovative worship forms in open church settings.

Throughout his career, Kranemann has held significant leadership roles including Chair of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft katholischer Liturgiewissenschaftlerinnen und Liturgiewissenschaftler (2002-2018), membership in Societas Liturgica and the Europäische Gesellschaft für Katholische Theologie, and participation in the Geisteswissenschaftlichen Klasse der Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt.

His extensive advisory work includes service on the Liturgical Commission of the German Bishops' Conference, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Catholic Bible Society Stuttgart, the Extended Board of the German Liturgical Institute Trier, the Art Commission of the Diocese of Erfurt, and various ecumenical commissions. Kranemann has also served as a trusted advisor to academic funding organizations including the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Professor Kranemann maintains active scholarly engagement through editorial work on major liturgical publications and ongoing research projects that examine the evolving relationship between liturgical practice, religious experience, and community formation in contemporary religious contexts.
