Dr. Benedict Wiedemann is a Research Fellow and Acting Director of Studies in History at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, and currently serves as a Tutor and Director of Studies for IA History at Lucy Cavendish College. He holds an Affiliated Lecturer position in the Faculty of History. His academic journey includes undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from University College London (UCL), followed by a Doctoral Fellowship at the Institute of Historical Research, London.
His research focuses on the political and administrative structures of the medieval papacy, particularly the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Key projects include studying petitions to the pope, the Roman provincial text (a medieval list of episcopal sees), and papal overlordship of European princes. His monograph Papal Overlordship and European Princes, 1000–1270 (Oxford University Press, 2022) redefines medieval governance as 'petition-led.'
Ben’s teaching roles include supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in medieval history, including Outline Papers 2 and 3. He also coordinates the Senior Tutorial Programme at Lucy Cavendish, focusing on student wellbeing and academic skills development.
