Ben Sweeting is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Architecture, Technology, and Engineering. He holds roles in the Radical Methodologies (RaM) Research Excellence Group and the Built Environment, Architecture and Construction (BEACON) Research Excellence Group, alongside the Centre for Design History. His academic background includes a PhD in Architectural Design from University College London (2014), an MA from the University of Cambridge (2002), and professional qualifications in architecture. Prior to his current position, he served as a Mellon Researcher at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (2014–2016) and held teaching roles at multiple institutions.
His research focuses on cybernetics' intersections with architecture and systemic design, emphasizing historical and contemporary connections. Key areas include recursive thinking, transdisciplinary approaches, and ethical dilemmas in design. He leads the AHRC/DFG-funded 'Enacting Ecological Aesthetics' project (2023–2025), exploring Gregory Bateson's ecological ideas. Sweeting has organized major events like the RSD11 Symposium (2022) and holds editorial roles in journals like Cybernetics and Human Knowing and Enacting Cybernetics.
His teaching philosophy integrates cybernetic principles, fostering student-led exploration through conversational design processes. He was awarded the Heinz von Foerster Award (2014) by the American Society for Cybernetics, reflecting his contributions to systemic design and cybernetic theory.
Current projects and collaborations emphasize ecological aesthetics, ethical design practices, and transdisciplinary research. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary challenges, offering frameworks for navigating complexity in built environments.
