Ben Richardson is Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Warwick, where he has taught since 2009. His work explores the intersection of global trade, labour rights and agrarian change, with particular expertise on EU trade agreements and commodity governance.
Education:
- PhD in International Political Economy, University of Sheffield (2008)
Research interests span international trade and development, the global governance of labour and land rights, the political economy of agriculture, food & diet, and analyses of capitalism in everyday life. He employs an interdisciplinary lens combining political economy, development studies and socio-legal perspectives.
His recent publications analyse labour standards in UK and EU trade policy, the COVID-19 pandemic’s everyday political economy, and pedagogical innovations in IPE teaching through the I-PEEL platform. A recurrent empirical focus is the sugar commodity chain, informing both academic and policy audiences.

Research funding & impact: Principal or co-investigator on grants totalling over £530k from ESRC and Leverhulme Trust, including projects on EU trade-labour linkages and social justice in the sugar-cane industry. Impact work contributed to REF2014 and REF2021 case studies on democratising trade policy and regulating global trade & finance.
He currently co-convenes the I-PEEL website and Global Groupwork project with Monash University, embedding collaborative student research on the IPE of everyday life. He welcomes prospective PhD researchers interested in trade, labour and agrarian political economy.
