Dr Ben Murphy is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Deputy Director of the International Law and Human Rights Research Unit at the University of Liverpool. He holds a BA in Politics with French from Loughborough University, an LLM in International Human Rights Law, and a PhD from the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on public international law, including the use of force, international institutional law, and global constitutionalism. He teaches modules on International Peace and Security, Law of International Organisations, and Law and Social Justice. His recent publications address topics like UN Security Council sanctions legality and global participatory democracy mechanisms. Murphy also coordinates postgraduate taught programmes and serves on departmental committees. His work intersects legal accountability frameworks with institutional governance challenges in international law.
Research interests include the legal dimensions of UN Security Council actions, international responsibility, and theoretical debates on global constitutionalism. His teaching spans criminal law, public international law, and legal theory. Supervised theses explore collective security alliances and cultural heritage protection in post-conflict states. Murphy actively contributes to academic discourse through publications and committee roles, shaping both pedagogy and research in international law.
