Ben Garfinkel serves as the Director of the Centre for the Governance of AI at the University of Oxford and is affiliated with the Future of Humanity Institute. He actively contributes to global AI policy through memberships in the Institute for Advanced Study AI Policy and Governance Working Group and the Center for a New American Security AI Governance Forum.
Garfinkel earned his undergraduate degree in Physics and Mathematics and Philosophy from Yale University, followed by a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford. His educational background bridges technical disciplines with policy-focused social sciences.
His research critically examines artificial intelligence security implications and develops methodological frameworks for forecasting technological risks. This work sits at the intersection of computer science, international security, and policy design, addressing challenges in governing advanced AI systems. His focus on anticipatory governance shapes practical approaches for managing AI's societal impacts.
As Director of the Centre for the Governance of AI, Garfinkel leads multidisciplinary research teams focused on developing implementable governance mechanisms for transformative AI technologies. His center facilitates global collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to address emerging challenges in AI safety and alignment.
