Ben Fitzpatrick is a Professor of Nursing Research and Development at Ulster University, serving as Research Director of the Institute of Nursing and Health Research. He holds a joint appointment with the Western Health and Social Care Trust as Assistant Director of Nursing (Research and Development). His roles bridge academia and healthcare sectors to enhance research collaboration and culture.
Education:
- BSc in Sport and Exercise Science (University of Wales, Bangor, 2000)
- Registered Nursing Degree (Ulster University, 2010)
- PhD in Physical Activity and Health (Ulster University, 2016)
Research interests focus on physical activity interventions in clinical populations, HIIT applications, and social prescribing. He has presented work internationally and contributed to policy discussions through guest speaking engagements.
Awards:
- Recipient of the UUSU Excellence in Teaching Award (2018) for the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences
Leadership: Previously Head of School of Sport (2019–2022), leading through the pandemic, and Course Director for BSc Sport, Physical Activity and Health on the Magee campus, achieving 100% student satisfaction in 2018.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Institute of Nursing and Health Research, collaborating with healthcare trusts to translate research into clinical practice.
