Dr Belinda Castles is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Sydney, with a career spanning both academic and literary domains. She holds qualifications including a BA Hons (Nottingham), MA (Manchester), and DCA (Western Sydney), and has taught Creative Writing since 2018. Previously, she directed the MA in Creative Writing at the University of Exeter (UK).
- Research Interests: Place in fiction, Walking and writing, Family memory (including traumatic histories), Reading as a writer, Contemporary Australian fiction, and Craft aspects of writing.
- Current Projects: A novel on literary envy and the Walking Sydney: writers in a changing city essay collection.
Her publications span Walking Sydney (2025), Reading Like an Australian Writer (2021), and four award-winning novels including Bluebottle (2018, Stella Prize Longlist) and Hannah & Emil (2012, Asher Literary Award). Academic outputs include journals on climate fiction, literary theory, and historical linguistics.
