Jens Beckert is Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, a leading research institution in Germany. He has been a member of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne since 2005 and joined the Faculty of Arts and Humanities there in 2020.
Research interests include Comparative sociology, Sociological theory, Economic sociology, and Sociology of law. His work explores the intersection of economic and social systems, with a focus on comparative analysis across contemporary societies.
Visiting positions have been held at institutions such as Cornell University, the New School for Social Research, Sciences Po, and the European University Institute.
