Bechara HELAL is an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture within the Faculty of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Montreal. He also serves as Vice-Dean of Research. His work focuses on architectural competitions, the role of architectural laboratories, and the intersection of design with cultural and environmental quality. HELAL co-edited the influential book *Architecture Competitions and the Production of Culture, Quality and Knowledge: An International Inquiry* (2015), exploring how competitions drive innovation and cultural discourse.
His research emphasizes sustainability, equity, and the redefinition of architectural quality through interdisciplinary collaboration. Key projects include leading initiatives like *Quality in Canada's Built Environment: Roadmaps to Equity, Social Value and Sustainability* (2022–2027), a Canada-wide partnership addressing urban equity and environmental resilience. HELAL’s work bridges theory and practice, influencing architectural pedagogy and policy through frameworks like the *Laboratoire d’étude de l’architecture potentielle* (LEAP).
Recent publications analyze architectural competitions as experimental spaces, the role of analogical thinking in design (e.g., culinary metaphors), and the historical evolution of architectural paradigms. His contributions span epistemological studies, design methodology critiques, and collaborative research on urban quality.
