Denis Bilodeau

Denis Bilodeau is a Professor at the Faculty of Planning, Université de Montréal. He holds a PhD in Architecture from Delft University of Technology and has directed research projects focusing on architectural theory, territorial imaginaries, and the epistemology of design. Bilodeau is a co-founder of the Laboratoire d’étude de l’architecture potentielle (LEAP) and has contributed to the Canadian Architectural Competitions Catalogue. His work explores the interplay of precedent, typology, and myth in architectural creation.

• Prix Grafika 2009 pour la meilleure muséologie (for the exhibition Concours d’architecture et imaginaire territorial)

Grants & Projects include leadership roles in FRQSC-funded initiatives like Potentiels de la qualité architecturale (2022-2027), addressing equity, sustainability, and cultural openness in built environments. He collaborated on projects such as Théories et pratiques contemporaines du projet d’architecture (2012-2017) and Innover et conserver, créer l’architecture contemporaine au risque du patrimoine (2005-2008).

Directed Theses include studies on architectural modernity, spatial typologies, interior-exterior relationships (Le Corbusier), and cultural heritage in Waldorf schools. Students include Juan Xavier Malo (PhD, 2019), Monica Nieto (M.Sc.A, 2015), and Claire Poitras (PhD, 1997).

Labs & Teams Bilodeau co-founded the Laboratoire d’étude de l’architecture potentielle (LEAP), collaborating with researchers from Montréal’s four universities. The lab focuses on critical analysis of architectural design, documentation of competitions, and pedagogical innovations in architectural education.
