Basma Hamdy is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at VCUarts Qatar, part of Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds a PhD candidacy at PhDArts: Leiden University and The Royal Academy of Art (KABK), Netherlands. Her academic journey includes an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and a BA from the American University in Cairo.
Her research focuses on bridging historical/political/social issues with design through participatory practices and archival mechanisms. Notable projects include the book Walls of Freedom: Street Art of the Egyptian Revolution (2014) and the forthcoming Found Khatt documenting Egyptian typography. She has exhibited globally at venues like Duke University and the Graphic Design Festival Breda.
Recognition includes the 2016 Communication Design Educators Award for research excellence and a Spielart Festival selection among 800+ international projects. Her grants include VCUQatar funding for typographic and cultural preservation projects.
Basma advises MFA students in design activism and has led workshops on collaborative design competencies. Her work emphasizes multiperspectivity, cultural narratives, and design as a tool for social change.
