Basanta Raj Pokhrel

Basanta Raj Pokhrel is a Research Scientist at the Department of Electric Energy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and is associated with the National Smart Grid Laboratory. He holds a PhD in Energy Technology from Aalborg University, Denmark, and a master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal, and NTNU, Norway.

Research Interests: His work focuses on smart grid operation, wide-area monitoring systems (WAMS), power system flexibility, real-time grid monitoring, and hydrogen integration in power systems. He has over ten years of experience in research project management, laboratory operations, and smart grid infrastructure development.

Key Projects:

• CINELDI: Enhancing grid efficiency through smart grid technologies
• ZeroKyst: Developing green hydrogen solutions for maritime fuel
• Hydro-Himalaya: Strengthening energy education in the Hindu Kush Himalayas

Teaching: He teaches courses such as Power System Analysis, Embedded Generation, and Power System Dynamics at the Master’s level, and core undergraduate courses like Switchgear and Control, and Measurement and Instrumentation.

Advising: He supervises PhD and MSc theses on topics like grid flexibility, green hydrogen production, and cyber-security in smart grids. Collaborations include Kathmandu University, University of South-Eastern Norway, and NTNU.

Labs & Teams: He leads research at the National Smart Grid Laboratory, focusing on innovative grid solutions and cybersecurity resilience.
