Bas van der Vossen is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy and the Philosophy Department at Chapman University. Previously, he held a Faculty Fellowship at Tulane University's Center for Ethics (2013-2014) and earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2008.
His research spans political philosophy, philosophy of law, and global justice, with a focus on Lockean theory of property rights and the ethics of political activism. He is an author of three books: Political Philosophy: The Basics (2024), In Defense of Openness (2018, with Jason Brennan), and Debating Humanitarian Intervention (2017, with Fernando Tesón).
At Chapman University, he founded and directed the Law and the Liberal Arts program and serves as Associate Editor of Social Philosophy and Policy. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to integrating philosophy, economics, and humanities through seminar-style courses.
