Josep Maria Bas Lay is an Associate Professor at the University of Girona (UdG), Department of Environmental Sciences, with a research focus on plant-animal interactions and ecological disturbances. He began his academic career in 1994 and obtained his PhD in Environmental Biology in 2001, supervised by Dr. Crisanto Gómez López and Dr. Pere Pons Ferran (both at UdG).
His research spans biological invasions (notably the Argentine ant Linepithema humile), myrmecology, ornithology, and forest fire impacts on terrestrial communities. Since 2019, he has led projects on sustainable fishing (DESMARES series) and invasive species management in apiaries. His doctoral thesis on seed frugivory and dispersal in Rhamnus alaternus earned recognition from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
He has held 7 contractual positions (2 part-time, 5 full-time) since 1994, completed 6 three-year work periods, and supervised 6 doctoral theses (with 2 ongoing). His academic contributions include 33 SCI publications, 27 research projects, and participation in 11 conferences.
