Miquel Costas is an Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and a group leader at the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC) at the University of Girona (UdG), Spain. His research focuses on bioinspired design of transition metal catalysts for oxidation reactions, emphasizing selectivity control and sustainable methodologies. He holds a PhD from UdG (1998) and has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota under Prof. Lawrence Que Jr. He leads the QBIS-CAT research group, exploring catalytic mechanisms and substrate recognition in non-heme iron and manganese systems.
Education: BSc Chemistry (UdG, 1994), PhD Inorganic Chemistry (UdG, 1998). Postdoctoral fellowships include the Ramon y Cajal Fellowship (2002) and ERC Starting Grant (2008). Awards include the ICREA Academia Award (2008) and the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry Excellence Prize (2014).
Research Interests: Development of bioinspired catalysts for C-H bond functionalization, mechanistic studies of high-valent metal-oxo intermediates, and application of predictive chemistry to catalysis design. Key areas include enantioselective oxidation, substrate recognition through non-covalent interactions, and sustainable oxidation methodologies using hydrogen peroxide.
