Bartosz Bartkowski

Dr. Bartosz Bartkowski is Assistant Professor in Land Economics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in joint appointment with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), where he also heads the junior research group AgriScape. His work is centered at the intersection of environmental economics, land use, and biodiversity policy. He is affiliated with the Department of Economics at UFZ, within the Working Group Land Use, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity.

His research interests include the economic analysis of agri-environmental policy, farmers' behavior, biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes, agent-based modeling, and economic non-market valuation—particularly deliberative monetary valuation. He integrates economic theory with empirical and modeling approaches to support sustainable land use and policy design.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on sustainable agriculture, soil biodiversity, public preferences for ecosystem services, and the effectiveness of agri-environmental measures. He leads and contributes to interdisciplinary projects such as AgriScape, BIOcean5D, and BonaRes, addressing trade-offs in multifunctional agricultural landscapes and marine biodiversity. His work combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including text analysis, discrete choice experiments, and modeling.

Bartkowski has advised on policy instruments for biodiversity conservation and contributed to national assessments of soil biodiversity. He has been actively involved in research and teaching since at least 2013, with continuous academic progression from PhD student to assistant professor. He is a member of EAERE and EAAE, reflecting his engagement with the environmental and agricultural economics communities. His work often involves collaboration with interdisciplinary teams across Germany and Europe.
