Bartosz Bartkowski

Bartosz Bartkowski serves as Assistant Professor at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig, Germany, holding a joint appointment with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He co-leads the junior research group AgriScape (Trade-offs along pathways towards multifunctional agricultural landscapes), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the Social–Ecological Research programme from 2022 to 2027.

He earned his PhD in environmental economics from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (2013-2017), focusing on deliberative monetary valuation of biodiversity. His research subsequently evolved toward modeling farmers' decision-making processes and their impacts on landscape multifunctionality.

Bartkowski's work centers on economic analysis of trade-offs in multifunctional landscape management and policy design for sustainability transformations. He employs a holistic social-ecological systems perspective to examine interactions among ecosystem components—including above-ground and below-ground biodiversity—under climate change pressures. This interdisciplinary research bridges environmental economics, ecology, and policy studies to address complex sustainability challenges in agricultural landscapes.

He actively disseminates research through his blog (formerly Skeptische Ökonomie) and has published explicit principles for PhD supervision and mentoring. Current work through the AgriScape project investigates trade-offs in agricultural landscape pathways using interdisciplinary modeling of social-ecological outcomes.
