Prof. Bart van den Hurk is an Endowed Professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) within the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds a PhD in Land Surface Modelling from Wageningen University (1996) and has extensive experience at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), where he led research divisions and contributed to global climate models like EC-Earth. Currently, he serves as a Lead Author for the 6th IPCC Assessment Report (WG-I) and as Strategic Research Manager at Deltares. His research focuses on climate interactions with socio-ecological systems, climate modeling, and climate impacts.
Professional roles include chairmanship of the WCRP Global Land-Atmosphere System Studies (GLASS) panel (2007–2010), leadership of major projects like ELDAS, IMPREX, and RECEIPT, and editorial roles for Hydrology and Earth System Science (HESS). He actively engages in policy-relevant climate research, linking scientific findings to Sustainable Development Goals.
Research interests span climate change attribution, land-atmosphere interactions, extreme weather forecasting, and climate adaptation strategies. Notable contributions include analyzing climate impacts on agriculture and flood prediction systems. His work bridges academic research with practical applications in policy and disaster management.
