Bart Wilson is a Professor and the Donald P. Kennedy Endowed Chair in Economics and Law at Chapman University, affiliated with the Argyros College of Business & Economics and the Economic Science Institute. He is a founding member and Director of the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy. His research focuses on experimental economics, property rights, and the evolutionary origins of economic behavior, bridging disciplines like biology, philosophy, and law.
Wilson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and has authored influential works such as Meaningful Economics (Oxford, 2024) and The Property Species (Oxford, 2020). He explores foundational questions about human prosperity, decision-making, and the moral and institutional underpinnings of exchange. His interdisciplinary approach integrates Adam Smith’s theories with modern experimental methods, examining topics like territoriality, cooperation in primates, and the socioecological evolution of property.
His grants include funding from the National Science Foundation and Federal Trade Commission. He collaborates with primatologists to study nonhuman decision-making and has published extensively in journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Nature Human Behaviour. His work challenges conventional economic assumptions by emphasizing human purpose, values, and ethical dimensions.
