Professor Bart Currie is a leading academic and clinician in tropical and emerging infectious diseases. He is a Professor in Medicine at Flinders University and Charles Darwin University, and leads the Tropical and Emerging Infectious Diseases team at Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin. He also serves as a senior staff specialist physician at Royal Darwin Hospital and has held leadership roles, including Director of RHDAustralia and HOT NORTH (NHMRC-funded initiatives).
His research focuses on coordinating clinical, public health, and community responses to infectious diseases, with a strong emphasis on melioidosis and other tropical pathogens. He has over 600 peer-reviewed publications and has supervised 23 PhD students. Key awards include the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Exceptional Performance in Research (2016) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Eric Susman Prize (2001).
Professor Currie’s work spans global collaborations and addresses critical health challenges in Northern Australia and beyond, including improving health outcomes through multidisciplinary programs and advocating for neglected tropical diseases.
