Professor Anna Ralph serves as the Director of Global and Tropical Health at Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin and holds a National Health and Medical Research Council Career Development Fellowship. She is also the Clinical Director of Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia and practices as a medical specialist in general medicine and infectious diseases at Royal Darwin Hospital. Professor Ralph is actively involved in research and clinical work focused on improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous communities in Australia's Northern Territory.
Professor Ralph's research interests span several critical areas in global and tropical health. Her primary focus is on rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in Australian Indigenous populations, where she has led significant studies on detection, diagnosis, and management. She also conducts important work on tuberculosis control, particularly in neighboring Southeast Asian settings, with several active research projects in Indonesia. Additionally, she has expertise in improving intercultural communication between healthcare providers and clients, developing training programs like "Ask the Specialist Plus" to enhance cultural safety in hospital settings. Her research employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to address complex health challenges in remote and underserved communities.
Professor Ralph's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on translating research into practical healthcare improvements. Her work spans infectious disease treatment optimization, rheumatic heart disease detection strategies, and innovative approaches to culturally safe healthcare delivery. She currently leads four research projects, including the "REmote Aboriginal Communities ending Tuberculosis (REACT)" initiative and "The Two Hearts Beat Study" focused on echocardiographic screening in pregnancy for women at high risk of rheumatic heart disease. Professor Ralph is an executive steering committee member of both the Australian Clinical Research Network and the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Network, demonstrating her leadership in the broader research community.
