Prof. Bart Clarysse holds the Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics at ETH Zurich. Previously, he held the Chair in Entrepreneurship at Imperial College London Business School and taught at Nottingham University and Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. His research focuses on high-tech startup growth strategies, acquisition dynamics, and market entry decisions. Clarysse has authored over 50 publications and co-authored The Smart Entrepreneur: How to Build for a Successful Business, addressing common pitfalls in venture creation. He advises governments on innovation policy and consults for entities like the Flemish Government and European Commission. Clarysse is also a founder of Inceptum, a business plan development firm, and serves on the board of Siruna, a mobile internet startup.
His research interests include analyzing corporate acquisition strategies, technology venture growth in adjacent markets, and valuation patterns. Recent work explores the impact of founder experience on market entry choices in solar PV industries and business model adaptation in emerging sectors. Clarysse has contributed to understanding institutional logics affecting academic entrepreneurs and the role of passion in team performance.
As an executive teacher, he has advised multinationals such as KLM and Johnson&Johnson on corporate venturing and innovation strategies. His work bridges academic research with practical entrepreneurship, emphasizing the interplay between technology, markets, and organizational dynamics.
Clarysse's research also examines corporate entrepreneurship systems, venture acceleration patterns, and paradox management in corporate ventures. His contributions span entrepreneurship education, innovation ecosystems, and the governance challenges faced by social enterprises.
