Barry R. Posen serves as the Ford International Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses on military organizations, security studies, and grand strategy. He is Director Emeritus of the MIT Security Studies Program and serves on the Executive Committee of Seminar XXI, a prestigious national security education program. Posen has held numerous distinguished fellowships including the Henry A. Kissinger Chair at the Library of Congress and positions with the Council on Foreign Relations, Rockefeller Foundation, and German Marshall Fund.
Professor Posen's research focuses on U.S. grand strategy and national security policy, with particular expertise in military strategy, nuclear studies, and international security. His scholarly work examines whether the diffusion of power away from the United States represents the emergence of a multipolar world order and how America should navigate this transition. He is a leading proponent of strategic restraint in U.S. foreign policy, arguing for a less activist approach that recognizes the limits of American power. His research on 21st century multipolarity investigates historical precedents while accounting for the transformative effects of nuclear weapons and modern conventional warfare.
Posen's extensive publication record reveals consistent themes across decades of scholarship, showing his sustained focus on the relationship between military power and international politics. His recent work has centered on the Ukraine war, European security, and the implications of great power competition, while maintaining his long-standing interest in nuclear strategy and the limits of military intervention. His articles span major journals including Foreign Affairs, International Security, and Foreign Policy, demonstrating both academic rigor and policy relevance.
