Barry Ness is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS), where he serves as Director of the local interaction platform in Skåne for the Mistra Urban Futures project and Director of Studies for the PhD Research School. Affiliated with CIRCLE and the Centre for Healthy Indoor Environments, his work bridges academia and cross-sector collaboration through initiatives like TRANSFORM and GLOCULL, endorsed by Future Earth.
Research Interests
His research focuses on inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges, particularly:
- Urban living labs for food-water-energy nexus
- Governance of energy systems and large land acquisitions
- Diffusion of sustainable innovations in sub-Saharan Africa
- Conceptualizing cross-scale sustainability problems
Recent publications examine governance frameworks for collective energy systems, B Corp certification's role in SME sustainability, and urban resilience strategies. These works span disciplines like environmental policy, energy engineering, and sustainable business practices.
Teaching & Outreach
Since 2003, Barry has led graduate courses on life-cycle assessment, sustainability tools, and transdisciplinarity, mentoring ~40 thesis students. He coordinates the Sustainability Science course in LUMES and engages non-academic actors via SustBeerLab to improve craft beer production systems in southern Sweden.
