Barry C Smith is a Professor and Director of the Institute of Philosophy at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. He founded the Centre for the Study of the Senses, promoting interdisciplinary research between philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists. His work focuses on the emotions, perception of taste, and self-knowledge.
He was appointed AHRC Leadership Fellow for the Science in Culture Theme in 2012, providing strategic leadership for interdisciplinary collaborations between arts and humanities researchers and scientists. He is also a prominent broadcaster, creating and presenting the BBC Radio 4 series The Uncommon Senses.
The Science in Culture Theme, under his leadership, funded over 50 projects, including innovative grants for research networks and large-scale studies like Constructing Scientific Communities and Cultural and Scientific Perceptions of Human-Chicken Interactions.
