Barry Jordan is Professor of European Cinema and Culture at De Montfort University, affiliated with the School of Media and Communication within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. He is a core member of the Cinema and Television History (CATH) research group, contributing significantly to the academic and cultural discourse on Hispanic and European cinema.
His primary research interests include:
- Hispanic Cinemas (Spain and Mexico)
- Contemporary Spanish and Mexican cinema
- Film history and genre studies (comedy, horror, art cinema)
- Television and public broadcasting
- Film theory, including cult and paracinema
- Transnational and national identity in cinema
The body of his published work reflects a deep engagement with the evolution of Spanish cinema, particularly in the post-Franco era. His articles examine themes such as national identity, public funding, genre transformation, and transnational production, revealing a consistent focus on how cinema reflects and shapes cultural and political change. His research often bridges historical analysis with contemporary industry practices, especially in public broadcasting and film policy.

Barry Jordan has supervised postgraduate students, including Victoria Walden (MA, 2nd supervisor). He has secured both internal and external research funding, notably from the AHRC and British Academy, supporting projects on contemporary Spanish cinema and its audiences. As Principal Investigator, he led applications for sabbatical fellowships and international collaborations, including a joint Anglo-Spanish project culminating in publications and conferences. His consultancy work includes journal editing, peer reviewing for major publishers, and participation in film conferences across the UK, USA, and Spain.
He is actively involved in academic leadership through his role as General Editor of Studies in Hispanic Cinemas, a journal he founded in 2002/2003. The journal publishes biannually and sponsors international conferences, contributing to the global discourse on Hispanic film. His case studies highlight his authoritative status in the field, with frequent invitations to lecture, publish, and comment on Spanish cinema in academic and public media.
