Barbara Wollenberg

Prof. Barbara Wollenberg is a Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), leading the Chair of Otorhinolaryngology within the TUM School of Medicine and Health. She specializes in translational research on immunological interactions in head and neck cancer, focusing on biomarker discovery and tumor immune evasion mechanisms. Her work integrates molecular approaches with clinical trials, particularly in immunotherapy.

She holds a medical degree from Saarland University and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), with a doctorate in Immunology and habilitation from LMU. She completed residencies in ENT and additional qualifications in allergology and skull base surgery. Notably, she received a Heisenberg Fellowship from DFG (2001) and joined TUM in 2019 after a tenure at the University of Lübeck.

Her research emphasizes biomarkers, tumor-immune dynamics, and immunotherapies for head and neck cancers. Key awards include the Acta Prize (2019), Georg Heberer Prize (2004), and Monika Kutzner Prize (2001). Her publications span immunology, oncology, and translational medicine, with recent work exploring PD-1 inhibitors, tumor microenvironments, and novel therapeutic strategies.
