Barbara Muraca is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Environmental Studies at the University of Oregon's College of Arts and Sciences, where she also serves as Associate Department Head for Philosophy and chairs the Curriculum and GTF Appointment Committees. Previously, she held positions as Assistant Professor at Oregon State University and Senior Researcher at the University of Jena's Center for Advanced Studies 'Post-growth Societies'. She earned her MA in Philosophy from the University of Turin (Italy) and PhD from the University of Greifswald (Germany).
Her research integrates environmental philosophy, process philosophy (Whitehead), and political ecology, with current focus areas including:
- Relational values in human-nature relationships and ecosystem services valuation
- Degrowth theory and post-growth societal transformation
- Global environmental justice and decolonial critiques of ecological discourse
- Biocapitalism and neoliberalism's impact on ecological systems
Muraca's publications demonstrate consistent focus on value pluralism in environmental governance, with recent work emphasizing transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability, power dynamics in conservation, and decolonial frameworks. Her scholarship shows increasing engagement with indigenous knowledge systems and participatory methodologies.
