Barbara Lee is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Social Work within the Faculty of Arts. She holds multiple roles including Director of the Centre for the Study of Services to Children and Families, Knowledge Exchange and Mobilization Scholar at UBC, academic affiliate of Carleton University's SIM Lab, and Affiliated Investigator at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Her research focuses on child welfare systems, ethno-cultural communities, and innovative teaching methods in social work education.
Education: Ph.D./M.S.W. from University of Toronto (Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work); B.S.W. from University of Victoria (Child Welfare Specialization); B.A. from Queen’s University (Psychology).
Research Interests: Barbara examines child welfare outcomes for marginalized groups, particularly Asian-Canadian families, through mixed methods and community-engaged approaches. She develops simulation-based training for social work students and bridges academic-community partnerships through initiatives like the Knowledge Exchange Podcast and Research and Evaluation in Child, Youth, and Family Services journal.
Grants & Awards: Received 2025 UBC Mentorship Award and 2016 CSWE Dissertation Award. Current projects include SSHRC grants on critical social work education ($229k), child welfare network development ($25k), and mental health capacity-building in Somalia ($430k).
Advocacy & Innovation: Leads initiatives addressing kinship care, immigrant family support, and Hong Kong diaspora integration. Created Canada’s first podcast (Knowledge Exchange: A Partnership-in-Action) highlighting community-academic collaborations.
Labs & Teams: Coordinates the Centre for Services to Children and Families, collaborates with Vancouver Coastal Health, and leads the BC Child Welfare Research Network. Engages with global partners like Carleton University’s SIM Lab.
