Barbara L. Bass

Barbara L. Bass, MD, is the Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), holding the Walter A. Bloedorn Chair of Administrative Medicine. A GW residency alumna (1986), she previously served as Chair of Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, building its department from inception, and founded the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education. Her leadership spans roles such as President of the American College of Surgeons and Chair of the American Board of Surgery.

• Education: BS from Tufts University; MD from University of Virginia.
• Career Highlights: Built interdisciplinary research teams in basic/translational/clinical research, established accredited surgical training programs, and pioneered computational surgery and health outcomes research.

Research focuses on surgical oncology, gastrointestinal biology, and advancing surgical education. She advocates for gender and diversity equity in academic medicine, being the first woman to lead GW’s SMHS. Awards include the American College of Surgeons’ Distinguished Service Award and international honorary fellowships.

Leadership includes roles at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Texas A&M College of Medicine. She drove national initiatives like the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and authored >170 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
