Barbara Lee Bass

Barbara L. Bass, MD serves as the Walter A. Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine, Professor of Surgery, Vice President for Health Affairs, and Dean of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In these integrated roles she provides strategic leadership across GW’s academic, clinical, and research missions while simultaneously serving as Chief Executive Officer of The GW Medical Faculty Associates. A graduate of Tufts University (BS, 1975) and the University of Virginia (MD, 1979), she completed her surgical residency at GW in 1986 and a research fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

Research Focus

Dr. Bass’s scholarly work has traversed computational surgery, surgical oncology, health-services research, and outcomes sciences. After two decades of bench research in gastrointestinal biology, her current portfolio emphasizes large-scale clinical trials and data-driven analyses aimed at improving surgical quality and patient outcomes. She has been continuously funded for more than 25 years by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, VA Health Services Research & Development, and the European Union.

Leadership & Service

Beyond GW, Dr. Bass was the inaugural Chair of Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, where she built the department from the ground up, recruited world-class faculty, and established ACGME-accredited training programs. She founded and directed the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education, which has trained more than 55,000 health-care professionals. Nationally, she has served as Chair of the American Board of Surgery, President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, President of the Society of Surgical Chairs, and the 98th President of the American College of Surgeons—championing diversity, equity, and innovation in surgical education and practice.

Laboratories & Teams

Dr. Bass leads interdisciplinary teams across GW’s medical enterprise, integrating the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the GW Hospital. Her collaborative networks span basic science laboratories, translational research units, and large-scale clinical trial consortia.
