Barbara J. Rolls is a Professor and Helen A. Guthrie Chair at the Penn State University College of Health and Human Development, where she directs the Barbara Rolls_CV_2020 and the 226 Henderson Building (University Park, PA 16802) laboratory. Her research focuses on satiety mechanisms and obesity prevention, emphasizing how food characteristics like portion size, energy density, and variety influence energy intake across the lifespan.
- Education: Ph.D. (University of Cambridge, 1970), M.A. (University of Oxford, 1970), B.A. in Biology (University of Pennsylvania, 1966)
Rolls' work explores psychological and environmental controls of food intake, with a focus on dietary strategies for weight management. She investigates how portion size effects interact with brain activation patterns and behavioral responses in children and adults, particularly in relation to obesity and loss of control eating.
Recent publications highlight her contributions to portion control interventions, including social media-based trials, neuroimaging studies on food cues, and behavioral economics applications to improve vegetable consumption. She also developed tools like the Diet Satisfaction Questionnaire and Weight-Related Eating Questionnaire to assess dietary behaviors.
Rolls leads research projects funded by grants targeting gestational weight gain, childhood obesity, and public-private partnerships to combat malnutrition. Her work bridges nutritional science, psychology, and public health policy.
