Barbara Hawkins is Professor of Biology at University of Victoria, researching stress tolerance mechanisms in trees with focus on nutrient dynamics and cold adaptation. Her work examines how trees withstand environmental stresses across centuries-long lifespans.
Dr. Hawkins investigates nutrient uptake and allocation in trees, particularly nitrogen cycling through mycorrhizal partnerships, and physiological adaptations to freezing temperatures. Her approaches range from microelectrode measurements of nutrient fluxes in roots to field studies of nutrient stoichiometry in forest ecosystems.
Current projects analyze co-adaptation between conifers and mycorrhizal fungi, and population-level variation in stress tolerance. Her research contributes to understanding forest resilience under climate change and informs sustainable forest management practices.
Dr. Hawkins teaches courses in plant physiology and forest ecology, mentoring students in laboratory and field research methods.
