Barbara Grüning

Barbara Grüning is Assistant Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, researching cultural sociology, intellectual history, and urban studies. Her work examines cultural production in socialist contexts, particularly East Germany’s music scenes and academic fields.

Key projects analyze the spatial politics of festivals, Marxist sociology’s institutionalization in the GDR, and comics as sociological narratives. Grüning employs field-spatial frameworks to study how cultural practices negotiate state power.
