Barbara Arneil is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on colonialism, post-colonial theory, Indigenous politics, gender, disability, and the history of political thought. She has authored influential books such as *Domestic Colonies: The Turn Inward to Colony* (Oxford UP, 2017), which redefined colonial frameworks, and *Disability and Political Theory* (CUP, 2016). Arneil’s work critically examines the intersections of liberalism, colonialism, and identity politics, with a focus on decolonial movements and settler colonialism. Her academic leadership includes roles as Past President of the Canadian Political Science Association and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Her research spans global anti-colonial thought, including studies on Indigenous resurgence, the politics of recognition, and the theoretical distinctions between colonialism and imperialism. She has supervised over 30 doctoral and master’s students, mentoring works on topics like Indigenous ethics, diasporic Muslim communities, and disability justice. Arneil holds awards such as the C.B. Macpherson Prize (2018) and the Order of Canada (2023).
Key themes in her scholarship include rethinking sovereignty, challenging liberal colonialism, and advocating for decolonial citizenship frameworks. Her current projects explore an 'organic political theory' and global anti-colonial thought. She teaches courses on political theory, Indigenous politics, and colonialism, and leads the UBC Global History of Anti-Colonial Thought research cluster.
