Banu Demir is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at Brasenose College. She also holds a part-time appointment as Professor of Applied Regional Economics at Erasmus School of Economics. She is currently on leave from Bilkent University, where she previously served as Assistant Professor. Additionally, she is a research affiliate of CEPR (International Trade and Regional Economics programme) and an affiliate of the CESifo Research Network in Munich.
Education:
She earned her DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford in 2012.
Research Interests:
Her research spans International Trade, Trade Finance, Multinational Firms, and Development Economics. Key focus areas include:
- The impact of trade policies and financial constraints on global supply chains
- Infrastructure development (digital and physical) in emerging economies
- Environmental policy leakages in international trade systems
- Gender parity through technological investments

Her recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate a strong empirical focus on trade dynamics, with recurring themes: trade policy analysis, production network vulnerabilities, infrastructure-development linkages, and environmental economics. Methodologically, her work employs large-scale datasets to examine causal relationships in international trade systems, particularly in developing economies.
