Dr. Balbinder Singh Bhogal is The Sardarni Kuljit Kaur Bindra Endowed Chair in Sikh Studies and Professor of Religion at Hofstra University, where he has been teaching since Fall 2007. Prior to joining Hofstra, he held academic positions at the University of Derby, England (1997-2002), James Madison University, Virginia (2002-3), and York University, Toronto (2003-7). His scholarly work focuses on South Asian Religions and Cultures with special emphasis on the Sikh tradition, particularly the Guru Granth Sahib, its philosophy and exegesis.
Dr. Bhogal earned his BA from Lancaster University and his PhD from London University's School of Oriental and African Studies in 2001. His doctoral dissertation was titled "Nonduality and Skilful Means in the Hymns of Guru Nanak: Hermeneutics of the Word." His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to the interdisciplinary study of religion, with particular attention to postcolonial perspectives on Sikh thought and practice.
Dr. Bhogal's research interests span multiple intersecting domains. His primary focus is on South Asian Religions and Cultures specializing in the Sikh tradition, particularly the Guru Granth Sahib, its philosophy and exegesis. He also engages deeply with hermeneutic theory and its radicalization through deconstruction, Indian Philosophy and its relation to Continental Philosophy, Mysticism, Diaspora studies, Translation and Postcolonial Studies, Modernity and Postmodernity, the construction of Religion, Orientalism, and the Animal-Human divide. His work consistently bridges traditional religious studies with cutting-edge theoretical frameworks, particularly in postcolonial and decolonial thinking. A distinctive feature of his scholarship is the exploration of "the perceptual turn" that challenges representational thinking through animal perception and mystic intuition.
Dr. Bhogal's scholarly publications reveal a distinctive trajectory moving from textual analysis of Sikh scripture toward broader philosophical and political implications. His earlier work focused on hermeneutics and interpretation of the Guru Granth Sahib, while his more recent scholarship has expanded into animal studies, affect theory, and the political dimensions of Sikh thought. A consistent thread throughout is his critical engagement with colonial modernity and its impact on religious traditions, particularly Sikhism. His work increasingly explores how the "animal" (pasū) and "mystic" (gurmukh) offer alternative epistemologies that trouble representational thinking.
Dr. Bhogal has been honored with The Sardarni Kuljit Kaur Bindra Endowed Chair in Sikh Studies, a prestigious position recognizing his significant contributions to the field. He has organized major international conferences, including "The Hermeneutics of Sikh Music (Rag) & Word (Shabad)" in 2010 and "Gurū Nānak's Ek-Anek Vision: Beyond Relativist and Plural Diversities of the Musical Word" in 2019, which celebrated the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. These conferences brought together scholars and practitioners from multiple countries to explore Sikh musical heritage and its connections to Sufi and Bhakti traditions.
As an educator, Dr. Bhogal has taught a wide range of courses including "Warrior Saints: An Introduction to the Sikh Religion," "Sikh Mysticism," "Religions of India," "Thinking Mysticism in the Academy: Gender and Power," "Yoga, Psychology and South Asian Religions," and "Buddhist Thought." His teaching reflects his interdisciplinary approach, connecting religious studies with philosophy, gender studies, and postcolonial theory. He has supervised numerous undergraduate honors theses and likely graduate students, though specific advisees are not mentioned in the available materials.
Dr. Bhogal is actively engaged with contemporary issues, having contributed scholarship on topics such as the 2020-2021 Indian farmers' protest (Kisan Morcha), Sikh responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the political implications of Sikh thought for contemporary social justice movements. His work demonstrates a commitment to connecting historical religious traditions with urgent contemporary concerns, particularly regarding how Sikh existential praxis offers alternatives to modern political subjectivity.
