Dr. Opinderjit Takhar is an internationally recognized academic and current Associate Dean Research and Knowledge Exchange at the Faculty of Education, Health, and Wellbeing, University of Wolverhampton. She serves as Director of the Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies and has previously held the role of Head of Religious Studies at the same institution (2015–2018).
Research Interests: Her scholarship focuses on Sikh identity formation, caste and gender dynamics in Punjabi and Sikh communities, and the implications of replacing Guru Granth Sahib with Amritbani Guru Ravidass in Ravidassia places of worship. She explores issues of caste legislation in the UK, Sikh political activism, and the intersection of religion with public discourse.
Grants include projects like Developing a place-based model of support for people with dementia from ethnic minorities (2024–2025), Raising Awareness of Organ Donation in Sikh Communities (2021–2022), and Healthy Faith Setting Toolkit (2021). She has led initiatives on physical activity, mental health, and community engagement in Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
Supervision: She is currently supervising two research projects related to caste and gender in Sikh communities and welcomes PhD inquiries on these topics. Her teaching interests cover Study of Religion, Sikhism, Buddhism, Fieldwork in Religious Studies, and Gender Issues in Sikhism.
