Balaji Rao

Dr. Balaji Rao is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State University’s College of Engineering. His research focuses on molecular and cell bioengineering, particularly in understanding and controlling cellular processes through engineered proteins. Key areas include stem cell bioengineering, protein engineering using yeast display and mRNA display technologies, and the study of trophoblast differentiation.

His lab develops tools to engineer proteins with desired properties, such as binding affinity and thermal stability, for applications in regenerative medicine and model systems for drug evaluation. Recent work emphasizes the derivation of trophoblast stem cells and the role of signaling pathways like BMP and Activin/Nodal in stem cell fate decisions. The Raogroup also pioneers methods for live-cell imaging of kinase activity and biosensor design.

Dr. Rao’s research integrates protein engineering, quantitative biology, and stem cell biology. His articles span topics like trophoblast differentiation mechanisms, cyclic peptide discovery, and quantitative analysis platforms for cellular processes. His work bridges fundamental science with translational applications in medicine and biotechnology.

He leads a lab group (Raogroup) at NC State and maintains an active research program supported by grants focused on stem cell engineering and protein-based technologies.
