Baile Xu is a Research Fellow at the Free University of Berlin, affiliated with the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy and working in the lab of Professor Matthias Rillig since April 2022. His research focuses on the combined effects of microplastics and pesticides on soil health and ecosystem functions, addressing critical anthropogenic stressors in global environmental change.
- PhD in Soil Science from Zhejiang University
- Visiting PhD student at University of California, Riverside
- Published over 10 peer-reviewed papers, including a highly cited work and an award-winning paper
- Guest editor for Frontiers in Environmental Chemistry and reviewer for multiple journals
- Collaboration with Professor Sebastian Riedel on fluorine-containing chemicals' impact on soil
Xu's work integrates soil science, environmental chemistry, and ecology to study pollution effects on terrestrial ecosystems. His research explores how microplastics and pesticide cocktails threaten soil biodiversity and ecosystem services that sustain agriculture and carbon sequestration.
Scientific contributions include:
- Excellent Paper Award recipient
- Rising Star Fellowship awardee
- Active journal editorial service
At Freie Universität Berlin, he participates in interdisciplinary research bridging ecology and environmental science, leveraging the university's unique structure with three geographically separated yet interconnected institutes.
